Welcome to Portugal everyone and we hope you have a fantastic time on your painting holiday.  We designed this course to appeal to your particular group and we look forward to sharing our ideas with you.

You will receive a welcome letter which should address most of the issues. In addition, we would like you to take note of the following comments:

Transfer from the Airport

Jane or Negla will meet you at Faro airport and bring you back to the The White Terraces house in Olhâo. The transfer will take about 20 minutes. This is included in the price. When you walk out into arrivals we will be there with your name on a tablet.

We will be tracking your flight so do not worry if there has been a delay as we will be aware of it.

Check in and out times

Check in is from 16:00. If you arrive earlier you are welcome to leave your bags at the house. Check out is 10:00.

On the first night there will be a welcome drink and dinner where you will get to meet everyone on your course, including the tutor. This is an opportunity to ask questions and to listen to the briefing about the week.

What to bring (non art essentials)

The Algarve has pleasant weather throughout the year. You will need to bring some warm clothes including jumpers and trousers for the evenings. You may wish to bring swimming gear and sun protection. All towels (both swimming pool and bath) are supplied with hairdryers in every room. There are English adapters in each room so you do not need to bring adaptor plugs.

Suggested Itinerary Portugal

Arrival– Faro airport

  • Airport pick up from Faro and take to the White Terraces
  • You will be allocated a room
  • At 18:00 there will be welcome drinks 
  • Dinner

Day 1: Drawing techniques in the studio

  • Breakfast
  • You will be given a map and a sketch pad
  • Craig, your art tutor, will explain the plan for the week.
  • 1 hour lesson explaining drawing techniques.  The students will then go out in the town, individually or in groups, to sketch the architecture of the buildings.  Craig will find you and help and guide as required.
  • Buffet lunch will be available at the The White Terraces
  • In the afternoon you will have time to explore the activities available or carry on drawing
  • 19:00 drinks and a review of the day with Craig together with a discussion on Vincent Van Gogh
  • Dinner

Day 2  Painting techniques in the studio and a nearby island

  • Breakfast
  • 1 hour lesson on painting techniques
  • Assemble with lunch picnics and you will be taken to catch the ferry boat to the nearby island of Armona. You will spend a few hours exploring the island and paint the scenes in watercolours.  Craig will find you and help and guide as required
  • Return to the White Terraces as a group or individually according to personal preference
  • 19:00 drinks and a review of the day with Craig together with a discussion on Lucian Freud and Turner
  • Dinner

Day 3  Advanced painting in the studio

  • Breakfast
  • A lesson on advanced painting followed by a still life painting in acrylic in the studio
  • Buffet lunch available in the White Terraces house
  • In the afternoon you will have time to explore the activities available or carry on painting in the studio
  • 19:00 drinks and a review of the day with Craig together with a discussion on Giacometti, Moore and Degas
  • Dinner

Day 4  Sculpture with clay in the studio

  • Breakfast
  • Studio lesson on sculpture with clay followed by making a sculpture of a still life
  • Buffet lunch available in the White Terraces
  • In the afternoon you will have time to explore the activities available or carry on in the studio
  • 19.00 drinks and a review of the day with Craig together with a discussion on Kurt Jackson
  • Dinner

Day 5  Seascape techniques in the studio and a nearby island

  • Breakfast
  • 1 hour lesson on seascape techniques
  • Assemble with lunch picnics and you will be taken to catch the ferry boat to the nearby island of Armona or Culatra. You can collect beach materials for a mixed media work.  Craig will help you as required
  • In the afternoon you will have time to explore the activities available or carry on in the studio
  • 19.00 drinks and a review of the day with Craig 
  • Dinner

Day 6  Group collaboration in the studio

  • Breakfast
  • Out and about to Olhão Saturday market
  • Studio session to put together a collaborative piece and finish pieces created throughout the week 
  • Exhibition of student's work for the local residents and visitors
  • Dinner
  • Feedback on the week and recommendations for future courses

Day 7 Saturday

  • Breakfast 
  • Lifts to airport
  • Store cases ready for the airport

Welcome to France everyone and we hope you have a fantastic time on your painting holiday. 'The course was set up to be designed to appeal to your particular group. We look forward to sharing our ideas with you and hearing your feedback.

Transfer from the Airport

Jane or Negla will meet you at the airport and bring you back to the Gare de SOS. The transfer each way will take about 1 hour 30 minutes. This is included in the price. We will be standing in the arrivals lounge and when you come out into the arrivals we will be there with your name on an iPad

If you are coming by train there are daily direct trains from St Pancras via Lille or Paris.Pick up available at Bordeaux or Agen by prior arrangement.

Day 1 Sunday: Gare de SOS

  • Breakfast
  • You will be given a sketch book
  • Jude, your art tutor, will explain the plan for the week and help collect any easels, pencils and paper. There is a one hour art lesson explaining composition, perspective then the students will do simple exercises.
  • Around mid-day you will head off to the village and spend some time exploring the town and sketching individually or in groups. Jude will find you and help and guide as required
  • Buffet lunch will be available at the Gare de SOS
  • Some free time to explore the activities available as required
  • 14:00 visit to a wine, cheese and armagnac tasting at Domaine de Sédouprat
  • 19:00 drinks and a review of the day with Jude
  • Dinner

Day 2 Monday

  • Breakfast
  • 1 hour lesson on simple watercolours
  • Assemble with lunch picnics and you will be taken to Le Jardin Du Grand Chêne garden which is a beautiful garden in the heart of the Gascony countryside. You will spend a few hours exploring the garden sketching individually or in groups. Jude will find you and help and guide as required
  • Return to Gare de SOS as a group or individually according to personal preference
  • 19:00 drinks and a review of the day with Jude
  • Dinner

Day 3 Tuesday

  • Breakfast
  • Studio session. You will be painting with a limited palate in acrylics
  • Lunch at the Gare de Sos
  • Jewellery making or optional activities
  • 19:00 drinks and a review of the day with Jude
  • Dinner

Day 4 Wednesday

  • Breakfast
  • Studio lesson will be a still life 
  • Lunch at the Gare de Sos
  • Jewellery making or Optional activities
  • 19:00 drinks and cooking demonstration
  • Dinner

Day 5 Thursday

  • Breakfast
  • Students to spend the day in Fources, a nearby historical village which is said to be one of the most beautiful villages in France. You will paint the town scene in a limited palate.
  • Lunch in Gare de SOS
  • Afternoon in the studio 
  • 19:00 drinks and a review of the day with Jude

Day 6 Friday

  • Breakfast
  • Studio session to finish off pieces of work.
  • 15:30 free time and optional activities
  • Exhibition of work for the local residents and visitors
  • Dinner
  • Feedback on the week and recommendations for future courses

Day 7 Saturday

  • Breakfast and collect sandwiches for the journey
  • Lifts to airport
  • Store cases ready for the airport
Art Essentials

Please bring:

  • 4B Pencil
  • Pencil Sharpener
  • Normal Pencil Rubber
  • Charcoal
  • Putty rubber

Bring your own paper and paints if you have them. Some materials, including a sketchbook will be provided and you will be able to buy some art materials at the Gare de SOS.

You will also need:

  • Water colour pallet – just a small sketch one will be fine such as

  • Synthetic paint brushes sizes 2,6 & 8
  • Good quality Acrylic paint in Payne’s grey, Mars Black and Titanium White

  • Acrylic paper pad (A3)
Food

Accommodation is all inclusive of meals and drinks.

We are planning to arrange an open buffet breakfast and lunch on most days, served in the White Terraces. On some days you may wish to make yourself a picnic lunch from the provisions available in the kitchen.

Wine, beer and non alcoholic beverages will be available at no extra charge.

We are active promoters of a healthy lifestyle and are happy prepare a wide selection of gluten free, vegan and vegetarian dishes.  Just let us know when you book.

Insurance details

Please provide information of your insurance company, policy number and their contact number should we need to call them.

You must make sure you have adequate travel insurance especially if you want to partake in one of the activities on offer. This is compulsory as some of the providers will not have insurance or if they have, it may not be adequate. We can introduce you to the providers, we do not take any responsibility for any of the activities on offer.
